A feature in many console or controller-based first-person shooters that helps players target enemies more easily by slightly adjusting aim when near a target.
"The aim assist in this game is really strong, it practically locks onto enemies."
Short for "aggression" or "aggravation." Refers to when an enemy NPC focuses its attacks on a specific player. Can also be used as a verb ("to aggro") meaning to attract the attention and hostility of enemies.
"The tank needs to maintain aggro so the healer doesn't get attacked."
Area of Effect. Refers to abilities, spells, or attacks that affect multiple targets within a specified area rather than a single target.
"Use your AOE abilities when there are groups of enemies clustered together."
Attack Damage Carry. A role in MOBA games that focuses on dealing high physical damage, typically ranged, and "carrying" the team in later stages of the game.
"I'll play support if you want to be the ADC."
Short for "alternate character" or "alternative account." Refers to a secondary character or account that a player uses in addition to their main one.
"I'm going to play on my alt tonight to level it up."
A temporary enhancement or improvement to a character's abilities, statistics, or attributes. Can also refer to a permanent improvement to a character, item, or ability made by the game developers.
"The mage cast a buff on the party that increased everyone's attack speed."
"The developers buffed the underused weapon in the latest patch."
A technique where players repeatedly jump while moving to make themselves harder to hit or to move faster in certain games. In some games, particularly older FPS titles, this can exploit game physics to achieve higher speeds.
"He's bunny hopping around the corner, making him really hard to hit."
A powerful enemy or opponent that is typically encountered at the end of a level, dungeon, or other game section. Bosses are usually more difficult to defeat than standard enemies and often have unique mechanics or abilities.
"We need to learn the boss mechanics before attempting the raid."
Bad Manners. Refers to unsportsmanlike conduct, taunting, or disrespectful behavior toward other players.
"Teabagging after a kill is considered BM in most gaming communities."
Bottom Lane. One of the three main pathways (lanes) on a typical MOBA map, usually referring to the lane at the bottom of the screen. In most MOBAs, this lane is traditionally occupied by the ADC and Support roles.
"Enemy missing from bot lane, be careful mid."
Good Game. A sportsmanlike acknowledgment at the end of a match, regardless of the outcome. Can be used sincerely to show respect or sarcastically when a game was particularly one-sided.
"GG everyone, that was a close match!"
The process of engaging in repetitive tasks or activities in a game to gain experience, items, or currency. Often involves defeating the same enemies repeatedly or completing similar quests multiple times.
"I spent the weekend grinding for that rare mount drop."
A technique in first-person shooters where players use the explosive force of a grenade to propel themselves higher or farther than a normal jump would allow, often to reach otherwise inaccessible areas.
"You can use a grenade jump to reach that hidden ledge with the power-up."
An organized group of players who regularly play together in an online game. Guilds typically have their own chat channels, shared resources, and often participate in group activities together.
"Our guild is planning a raid this weekend, make sure you're prepared."
Graphics Processing Unit. The specialized electronic circuit designed to rapidly manipulate and alter memory to accelerate the creation of images in a frame buffer intended for output to a display device.
"I need to upgrade my GPU to run this game at max settings."
A noticeable delay between a player's action and the game's response, typically caused by high latency (ping), insufficient hardware performance, or server issues. Results in stuttering gameplay or delayed reactions.
"I'm experiencing a lot of lag right now, my ping is over 200ms."
Looking For Group. Used when a player is searching for other players to join them for a particular activity or mission.
"LFG for heroic dungeon, need tank and healer."
Items, equipment, currency, or resources that can be collected from defeated enemies, completed quests, or discovered in the game world. Can also be used as a verb to describe the act of collecting these items.
"Don't forget to loot the boss for rare items."
A specific combination of weapons, equipment, perks, or abilities that a player selects for their character before entering a match or mission.
"I'm using a sniper loadout for this map since it has long sightlines."
The act of delivering the final blow to an enemy unit (usually a minion or creep) to gain gold, experience, or other benefits. In many MOBAs, only the player who lands the killing blow receives the full gold reward.
"Focus on getting your last hits to build up your gold advantage."
A change made by game developers that weakens or reduces the effectiveness of a character, ability, weapon, or strategy that was considered too powerful. The term comes from Nerf toys, which are soft and harmless versions of weapons.
"They nerfed the shotgun in the latest patch, it does 30% less damage now."
Non-Player Character. Any character in a game that is not controlled by a player but instead by the computer or game's AI. NPCs can be quest givers, vendors, enemies, or simply background characters that add life to the game world.
"Talk to the NPC with the exclamation mark to start the quest."
A technique in first-person shooters where a player uses a sniper rifle or other scoped weapon to kill an opponent without using the scope to aim, typically firing from the hip. Often considered a skillful or flashy move.
"Did you see that no-scope? I didn't even have time to aim!"
Short for "newbie." Refers to a player who is new to a game or inexperienced. While "newb" is often used neutrally to describe a beginner, "noob" frequently carries a negative connotation, implying the player is not only inexperienced but also unwilling to learn or improve.
"We were all noobs once, just give them time to learn the game."
A type of gameplay in MMOs where a large group of players (typically 10-40) work together to defeat powerful bosses or complete challenging content that cannot be accomplished by smaller groups. Raids often offer the best rewards and most difficult challenges in the game.
"We're organizing a raid for Saturday night, make sure your gear is ready."
Random Number Generator. Refers to the algorithms used in games to create randomized outcomes. Often used to describe luck-based elements in games, such as item drops, critical hits, or damage ranges.
"I've killed this boss 20 times and still haven't gotten the rare drop. RNG hates me!"
The process of a player character returning to the game after being defeated or killed. Also refers to the point or location where players reappear after death.
"I'll respawn in 10 seconds, wait for me before pushing."
The act of leaving your assigned lane or position to move around the map and assist teammates in other lanes, typically to create advantageous situations or secure objectives.
"Our mid laner is roaming bot to help secure the dragon."
An aggressive early-game strategy in real-time strategy games where a player quickly builds combat units to attack the opponent before they have established proper defenses or economy.
"Be careful of a Zergling rush in the first few minutes of the game."
A player role or character class designed to absorb damage and hold enemy attention (aggro), protecting more vulnerable team members. Tanks typically have high health, armor, and defensive abilities but lower damage output.
"We need a tank who can survive the boss's heavy attacks."
Describes negative, harmful, or abusive behavior in gaming communities. This can include verbal abuse, harassment, intentional team sabotage, or any behavior that creates an unpleasant experience for other players.
"That player was being toxic in chat, constantly insulting teammates for small mistakes."
A subgenre of first-person shooters that emphasizes fast reflexes ("twitch" reactions) and precise aiming. These games typically feature high movement speed, low time-to-kill, and reward quick reaction times.

Text-to-Speech. A feature used in streaming platforms that converts text messages or donations into spoken audio that plays on the stream. Often used for donation messages or channel point redemptions.
"The streamer had to turn off TTS because viewers were spamming inappropriate messages."
A competitive event where players or teams compete against each other in a structured format to determine an overall winner. Tournaments can range from small local competitions to major international events with large prize pools.
